Darkthrone fue formada en 1986 por Glyve Nagell, Ted Skjellum, Ivar Enger, and Dag Nilsen. Comenzaron tocando "Death Metal", realizarón 4 demos entre 1988 y 1989: "Land of Frost", "A New Dimension", "Thulcandra" y "Cromlech". Posteriormente grabarón su primer LP "Soulside Journey" y esta fue lanzada por Peaceville en 1991. Decidierón olvidarse de sus antiguas producciones, Glyve Nagell mencionó que su primer LP fue la moda, y que a partir de entonces solo tocarian black metal, sus anteriores trabajos no les gustaban.
